Online hacktivist group which goes by the collective name "Anonymous" responded to a trailer for the upcoming shooter videogame "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2" which portrays the organization as the enemy of the United States, with a YouTube video of their own in ...
... which they threatened to hack Activision, the entertainment company behind the game, defacing their website and disrupting their online servers.
The video, which was posted by ALEXIUS ANON on May 4 and currently has 1,549 views, defends Anonymous as an organization of, " fighters for freedom in every aspect of meaning," stating, "we are not terrorists."
Responding to the offensive trailer, which was released online last week, Anonymous has already stolen and made public the personal information of Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg, but now they are threatening to hack the company's websites and cause millions of dollars worth of online damage.
"This act will show you how serious our collective us and that we will protect any human who calls himself Anonymous," says the video's narrator, who wears a Guy Fawkes mask.
The original "Blacks Ops" trailer also depicted a person wearing the same mask, while a narrator notes that hackers could take over the military's servers and turn their drones against them and the US civilian population, stating, "the enemy can be anywhere and can be anyone."
The Guy Fawkes mask has become a symbol of Anonymous, and is worn by members of the hacktivist collective at public rallies.
The trailer also includes quotations from Oliver North, who became infamous after taking the fall for selling weapons during the Iran-Contra government scandal.
"Call of Duty ads feature #Anonymous as villains, and stupidly use Oliver North as "good guy" spokesman," wrote @AnonMedics in a message on Twitter.
The two-minute-long teaser trailer for the upcoming dystopic shooter game, which will be released on Nov. 13, was posted online on Wednesday. The live-action "synopsis" describes a future in which the US military has developed new technolgy for advanced warfare, which then becomes compromised when it is hacked by either an enemy nation or a terrorist organization, bringing chaotic war to a 21st century Los Angeles.
The visual reference to Anonymous, who are known for hacking prominent websites to protest imoral and illegal activity as well as simply for revenge or "the lulz," had self-proclaimed Anonymous members responding almost immediately. Anons quickly took to Twitter to voice their reactions to the news that they might be the enemy in the upcoming "Call of Duty" game.
"Was #Anonymous seriously portrayed as the #enemy in new #COD Black Ops 2????? Incredibly disturbing #OWS," wrote @ThomFrancis in a message onTwitter.
"If #Anonymous are the bad guys it'll really ruin our gaming experience if we have to shoot ourselves," joked@YourAnonNews.
